Making your pitch sound "skillfull may not be the best approach. While on one hand some employers do value having relevant experience before you interview, on the other hand, it may be just as compelling to state your experience, and prove your hungrier to get more and better experience. This is especially true in investment banking roles, where most people don't have the same experience and where being hungry is important, given that the hours are so long.

From a tactical standpoint, effectiveness often hinges on practice and authenticity. Assuming you are authentic in your interview, then practice what you think you want to say during the interview. As Andrea suggested, you'll see right away that from a timing perspective, that there's no way you can dive into any of the roles in a quick "tell me about yourself" question. Instead, it's really better to use it as a chance to tell your story. Talk about your progression in school and career and be sure to give the why's of your decision making, since once again, they're looking for real passion. And in the end, this should be seamless, since your professional experiences are investment banking.

I'll also note that to the extent you can not only address the banking role but also that you want to work specifically at a boutique, the better off you are. I can't speak specifically about your current firm since I don't know, but typically, boutiques have a very different culture than big firms. And so positive experiences working at small firms, or even negative experiences at a big firm, may help to reinforce the cultural fit. The "tell me about yourself" question is too general to do a deep dive into the specifics of your internships and how relevant they are for M&A. Your goal should be to touch on a few interesting factoids that are interesting and aren`t recitations of your resume. You might consider a mix of personal things that reinforce some key skills for the job (sky diving, competitive poker, volunteer commitment, etc that could showcase an appetite for risk/uncertainty, ability to handle pressure, success in a competitive arena, ability to make an impact etc) and some explanation as to why you are so interested in finance. It`s obvious from your background that you are interested in finance. You can work toward what it is about your past experiences, professional and possibly personal, that lead you to believe that an M&A boutique is the right place for you. ...less
